Philip C. Smith Jr. Navy Husband of Laura (Jim) Oates Smith.  LCdr. USN Ret. US Naval Academy - 1946. Served on aircraft carrier, Mindoro, CVE 120, for 32 months, then flight school at Pensacola, Fla. and Corpus Christie Texas. Flew in various squadrons for approximately 17 years. Stationed in Maine, Ohio, Hawaii, Bermuda, and other places. Deployed around the globe. Retired in 1966. Began a second career in Library Sciences at several colleges. After many years of living in many places around the country, Philip and Laura put their "flaps down" and made their "final landing" with retirement in Wilmington, N.C. Agnes Marshall (Oates) (deceased) Army Later, wife of John Martin Oates, Jr. Agnes achieved the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army Nurse Corp. in 1944. Unknowing to Agnes, her future husband, John Martin Oates, Jr., (Jack), at that time was stationed on New Caledonia, South Pacific.
Herbert Koseuth Oates (deceased) Navy Son of Jethro David and Minnie Martin Oates. Gunner's Mate. Herbert served on a PT Boat. He spent time in Italy, Bermuda, and other locations.
Luther Eugene Oates Navy Son of James Arthur Oates and grandson of David and Minnie Oates. Served from 1945-1946 on the USS Burleigh APA 95. He was stationed in the Phillipines, Guam, and Panama Canal.

Norwood Keith Oates Army

Son of Richard Aaron and Mildred Grady Oates and grandson of David Jethro and Minnie Martin Oates. Served in the Army from 1/5/49 to 1/7/52. Discharged with  rank of  Sargeant. Successfully  completed  the Airborne Jump School at Fort Benning, Ga. in Sept 1949 and was assigned to 11TH Airborne Medical Battlion at Fort Campbell Ky. In August 1950 he was assigned to the 187TH Airborne Regimental Combat Team as a Medical Aidman and spent 10 months in Korea. He made combat parachute jumps behind enemy lines 10/20/50 and 3/23/51. He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device, Purple Heart, Medical Badge, Parachute Badge, Meritorious Unit Citation and Korean Sv Medal w/4bz sv stars and arrowhead. After being discharged from the Army he completed High School and graduated from N. C. State University in 1959 with a B. S. Degree in Engineering.

Richard McCullen Air Force Son of Sally and Oates McCullen and grandson of "Duke" and Lillie Oates McCullen.  1954-1954. Master Seageant. Served in the Air Force from March 30,1954 until retirement on March 31, 1974. Foreign Service included three years in Panama, 1959-1962 and one year in Viet Nam, 1971-1972.
Rudy Oates Air Force Son of Myrtie and Ronald Oates Sr.  1962-1966.  1st Lt. - Stationed in Alabama and Ohio
John M. Oates Army Son of Catherine and J. William Oates.  Drafted in October 1966. Completed basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. John was stationed at Fort Ord, California and Ft. Hood, Texas before completing service in 1968.
Bill Oates Army Son of Catherine and J. William Oates.  Served in Vietnam. Staff Sergeant.  Drafted in August 1966. Completed basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and won proficiency trophy for hand to hand combat. Bill attended Quartermaster school at Fort Lee, Va. In April 1967 left for Long Bien, Vietnam.  Stationed at Vung Tau, Vietnam for 12 months as part of the Air Force Supply System.
Dewey McCullen Army Son of Velma and Cecil D. McCullen Sr.  Served in Vietnam.  Served with the 187th Assault Helicopter Company at Tay Nin base camp III Corp RVN, Jan 1969 through Jan 1970.  Served as an attack helicopter pilot and flew UH 1C, UH 1M, and AH 1G Cobra attack helicopters.  Was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses for Valor.

Air Force Son of Joe T. Oates, Sr.  Staff Sergeant. Radar operator.  1965- Stationed in Blaine, Washington as part of the Pacific Coast warning system. 1966- Stationed at Murphy Dome, Alaska remote radar site as part of the Dew system or North American early warning system for Soviet missile attacks. 1967- Stationed at Florida, SAC U2 base. Flew in radar planes in monitoring hostile activity in the 90 mile zone between Cuba and the USA.  Awarded medal as a "Sharp Shooter".  Joe attended Western Washington University under the GI Bill to earn a BS degree in Political Science.

Dan Connell Army Husband of Gail Jones Connell and son-in-law of Hilda Oates Jones and Eddis Jones.  Served in Vietnam. Entered the Army shortly after graduating from East Carolina University. Dan served with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam from September 1969 through August 1970. Dan was an electronic sensor monitor stationed at Cu Chi and for a short time on Nui Ba Den mountain.

Vietnam and Cold War era Defense Industry
Ronald Oates Jr. Civilian Son of Myrtie and Ronald Oates Sr.  1967-73.  Electrical Engineer- Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co.  Member of the "Civilian Crew" aboard Nuclear Submarine Finnback during initial Navy sea trials. Responsible for testing the Mark 48 Torpedo Firing System;   Also, served as company liaison and training instructor for the first navy crew assigned to the Aircraft Carrier Nimitz. Training was conducted on the WWII aircraft carrier Bunker Hill located at the naval base in San Diego, California.

End of the Cold War era

Lawson Scott Oates Navy Seal Son of Kate and Hugh F. Oates Jr.  1995 - Completed military service in January, 2001.
Stuart Randall (Randy) Oates Navy Son of Luther Oates and Great-Grandson of David Jethro and Minnie Oates. Served as a Nuclear Engineer on the USS Roosevelt - 1982.
