I am a descendant of Carraway Oates. I see you have nothing on your Web Site on his family. Would you like a GEDCOM on his family to add to your web site? I have the three volumes of the Oates History & Family by Addison Oates of Tucson, AZ. Most of this is on other branches of the Oates family & not the one I descend through. I also have a small copy of a copy of a photo of the James Oates Bible taken by my Aunt who got to hold it in San Antonio, Texas, when it was taken out of the bank vault for her to see. This was about 8 or 9 years ago. (My great grandmother was Mary Jane Oates, born Henry Co., Ala. & died Lovelady, Houston Co.,Texas, who married Caleb Gant Summers, Jr.) Contact Me: <joancardon@aol.com>

Hello, my name is Christina Renée Martinez (Palmer)and I live in Albuquerque New Mexico. My grandfather is AW Palmer married to Doris Emily Oates, daughter of Charles Oates and Minnie Ola Alexander. Charles Oates was the son of Stephen M. Oates and Margaret A. Wilson. Stephen M. Oates was the son of Robert Oates and Sarah Mae Mathews. Robert Oates was the son of Stephen Oates and Mary Shipp. Stephen Oates was the son of James Oates and Mary Ann Wyatt. James Oates was the son of James Oates and Sarah Clayton (Fellows?) James Oates was the son of Joseph Oates and Elizabeth Wyatt, and Joseph Oates was the son of James Oates and Elizabeth Eivens (?) Whew! I just started putting together my families history, and recently began working on my great-grandmother, Doris E. Oates. Doris is deceased but her son, Arthur Wayne Palmer (my grandfather), and daughter Jacqueline Jackson (Palmer) are still alive and living in San Diego California. I hope I've given enough information to help you confirm that I've found the right family. Your website is wonderful, and I would love to find more family for my grandfather. My email is Renee0675@comcast.net, and I hope to hear from someone soon. Thank you!

I am Junius Kennedy Oates Jr. M. D. son of Sr. M. D. This will be my first post on this family site. Our line, to the best of my knowledge, is as follows: Michael 1858-1945, Oliver Wyatt, Michael, Jethro. I do lack some documentation and a sense that I completely understand the connections. Of course I also am concerned as to the names of the wives and children. Beyond my granddad, these are vague to me. If any can help, I would sincerely appreciate it. Email--jkoates@cableone.net

for Colleen Daggert: Have you tried right-clicking on the picture on the screen, saving it into your photo program and enhancing it? My experience using that route has been fairly successful. Of course there are always professional photography shops that can restore old photos. The original may not have been perfect. I'm tickled to have found the pictures of my great great grandparents Sallie and Arthur Barfield, even if the quality is poor; my great grandmother Lindy Pennington and grandfather David Jethro Oates--none of whom I'd ever seen a picture of. Sorry, but I have no idea who owns the originals. Loretta Oates Davis (near Richmond, VA)

On other news, I would greatly appreciate any information on Joseph Oates, son of George and Hannah Christened in St Michael, Barbados, 4/25/1697 and what appears to be his siblings and their Christening <C> or other dates listed below: Mary Oates <f> C 1/1/1687 St Michael Aphia Oates <f> C 3/6/1680 St Michael Apphia Oates <f> 2/26/1692 St Michael Wm. Oates <m> 10/18/1654 St Michael

Any information would be a huge help since my Father was certain that these were direct ancestors from a missing/unknown James <the Elder> son or grandson but died without any substantiation. TXsueMOM@aol.com

I have been unable, as of yet, to substantiate an exciting tidbit that I have been hunting for over the years... According to LBate18495@aol.com he has substantiated that James <the elder> Oates was born in Rauceby, Lincolnshire, England in 1660 and he was christened there in 1662.

Don't know about you researchers, but I am carrying on the life-work of my Grandfather, John Melvin Oates in TX and this is a huge missing piece of the puzzle.

Commander at the TV base will be Rudy Boesch--the crusty old ex-Navy Seal who you may remember came in 3rd place on the first Survivor show. The show will air September 12th @ 10pm on the USA channel and run every Wednesday for 3 months. Scott is one of 4 "poster boys" for the show so you are likely to see his picture on quite a few magazines, etc. Hope everyone watches and cheers for Scott!

During June, 2001, Laura (Jim) Oates Smith and Philip Smith celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a return to Nassau in the Bahamas where they spent their honeymoon in 1951. This time, however, they were joined by three children (11 family members in all) on a cruise ship from Port Canaveral, Florida. Even though, they discovered in their search for the honeymoon hotel, that it had been torn down many years ago, they have provided for the Edwin Oates family 1950-1969 page, a photograph of that romantic location from 1951. I would like to express my appreciation to everyone that has made this web page possible. It is GREAT. This web site is exactly the reason I went to the trouble to post the information and sometimes mis-information on the web and on the FamilyTreemaker Homepages. I was unhappy that so much research had gone into the Oates line only for the researcher to die and the information was not avaliable to anyone else research....This site is the ultimate...Thanks for doing such a good job. Just wanted to let folks know two pieces of news. 1) Nancy Oates was named to the 40 member North Carolina All-State cheerleading squad. The team was selected from cheerleaders from 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A high schools across the state. Nancy had the high score in the state and 2) Nancy just recently made the N.C. State cheerleading squad during tryouts for the 2001/2002 season. In April, N.C. State cheerleaders won the Collegiate Grand National Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. Ron and Linda have already ordered season football tickets. Yea!

We were excited to have a visitor from Michigan come by on December 24. Bill Oates was visiting in Newton Grove and slipped away to share some time with us in Raleigh. We looked at photos of Bill's beautiful granddaughter, Bethany, and of course, we spent time looking at the website and discussing some new ideas for the site. Bill is planning to setup the Jethro William Oates family tree at FamilyTreemaker.com. He already has most of the necessary information on diskette. Ronald Jr.

There's a new "bud" on the Oates family tree! William Alexander Hugh Oates ("Alex") was born to Scott and Vanessa Oates August 20th and weighed 7 pounds and 5 ounces (20 inches long). His grandfather Hugh Jr and Great grandfather Hugh Sr. were there to welcome him to the world as well as great aunt Linda and her daughter Lindsay, greatgrandmother Doris, Grandmother Kate, aunt Katharine and Uncle Trey and a host of other welcomers. You forget what a miracle God gives us with new offspring--such a gift! Although he will be called "Alex" most of the time, Hugh Sr says he will be called "Hugh Boy" in Mt. Olive! Hope everyone else is as happy as we are.

Hot Fun In The Summertime.... Between July 20-26 Sandra and Paul Sasser and Gail and Dan Connell enjoyed time relaxing at New Smyrna Beach, Fla. (not far from Daytona). The week went great for the sisters and their husbands!! The beach was beautiful; the Greyhound Dog Racing was lots of fun- "Youbetcha"; The Sly Fox and J.B.'s had the best margaritas --and steak and seafood, of course; Dan and Paul had one day of great fishing with a guide, while Sandra and Gail enjoyed the beach and a great French Pastry shop. Maybe they'll share a picture from their trip with us. (The Sly Fox sounds like an interesting place for Aunt Hilda and Uncle Eddis' girls!) Gail Jones Connell

We have been in Norlina for a little over a month and we are really enjoying it! Our congregation members have been keeping us stocked with fresh vegetables. Bryan's sermons keep getting better and better, but I'm not biased or anything! I have been doing the children's sermons and this Sunday I sang a solo in church. We have been working with the youth group together and tonight we are taking them for ice cream. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it! Everyone has been very accepting of us. We also have a new puppy, Gizzie, who one of our congregation members calls our four-legged baby. She is spoiled rotten! Anyway, we would love to hear from any of the family so e-mail us at bryanhuffman@hotmail.com or duffy@ncol.com or better yet, come and see us in Norlina! Please continue to pray for our ministry together. Take care and God bless!

Ronald Oates Sr. was admitted to Goldsboro hospital on Thursday after falling twice due to weakness. On Monday, he will leave the hospital and enter the Brithaven rehab facility across from the hospital. Among other things, the pain medicine affects his balance when walking. Until his falls, he had been able to walk to the bathroom, etc. using a walker. He will be 89 next Saturday, July 29th. Ronald Jr.

Ronald Oates Sr. spent July 4th in Raleigh at the home of Ronald Oates Jr., Linda, and Nancy. Rudy and friend Sara McSwain were present along with Kathy Oates Parzygnat and husband Mark. Dad had a great day! He bounced back to have his best day in months. He even got in the swimming pool for a few minutes. He thought that he would swim a couple laps and get out. Unfortunately, he found that could not swim at all. He was a great sport and had his old sense of humor and wit back. Sadly, his health is failing very rapidly. We were hoping to have a huge 90th birthday celebration on July 29, 2001. We are afraid now that he will not make it to his 89th. It was a very special and memorable day for all of us. Ronald Jr.

While the others enjoyed the backyard pool, Gail and I were hard at work scanning some of her collection of photos to share with the Oates Family. See "What's New" for Gail's contribution to the family. Especially, checkout the one of Glenda, Gail, and Sandra sitting on the sofa in Grandma and Granddad Oates' living room(taken about 1950). Last Saturday, I visited the Oates Family Cemetery in Sampson County, located behind the Edwin Oates homesite. Tom Hopkins met me at the cemetery and we took photographs of each tomb stone and grave marker (not your normal thing to do on a Saturday afternoon). We took a walk down the corn rows towards Young Swamp to try and locate an earlier cemetery believed to be the grave site of Artesha Oates, wife of Jethro Oates (1732-1780), but gave up on that adventure until the Fall, when there is not so much under brush. Also, might need Uncle Hugh's or Jack's help in finding the exact location. Afterwards, Tom and I had a nice visit with Wanda Oates (Martin's wife) and toured Wanda's impressive high tech office in one corner of the house. Wanda and Martin maintain the cemetery. Wanda has since sent me a computer file of Jack Oates' second book which will soon be available at OatesFamily.com. Ron (Ronald Jr.) Oates

This week, I received about 30 very interesting photos from Uncle Jack. They were all from WWII when he was stationed in the Pacific in New Caledonia and Manila, and then in Japan at the end of the war. The collection includes two special photos of Uncle Jack and Uncle Bunk together when they met up in Nagoya, Japan in the Winter of 1945. Uncle Bunk had been stationed in France and after the war ended in Europe was sent to Manila and then on to Japan. During the same period, Uncle Ralph was stationed in England.

Within the next two weeks, I hope to post these photos to the website. Ronald Jr.
