[ Return to 1775 ]
To the left is a current day map of eastern North Carolina. This is the
area where John Oates, Joseph Oates, James Oates, and Jethro Oates
settled in the 1740's and 1750's
The current-day county
structure and boundaries are much different from those of the mid-1700's, as
indicated by the chronology below:
1746 Johnston was formed
1750 Duplin formed from New Hanover
1758 Dobbs formed from Johnston; abolished 1791
1779 Wayne formed from Dobbs
1779 Richmond formed from Anson
1784 Sampson formed from Duplin
1787 Robeson formed from Bladen
1899 Scotland formed from Richmond
The "Red" star on the map to the left is centered on Faison, North Carolina (pop. 600), which is centrally located to
the various Oates landmarks presented in this section of the
website. The basic economy
of the area, agriculture, has changed little over the past 150 years.
Faison was established in
17xx).
